“If you are the smartest person in the room, then you need to change the room.” You would have heard some version of this leadership advice at some point in your career. I have. Maybe Elon did too and that’s why he is trying to get to Mars.
I have always had a problem with this saying. Mainly because of what the reverse implies. Sit with it for more than a few minutes and think if you aren’t the smartest in the room, why would people who are way smarter than you want you there at all? Why would they willingly work with someone who knows less than they do?
The saying starts feeling a little odd once you look at it from the other side, doesn’t it?
I know. I know. This is exactly the kind of over-analysis the world doesn’t need. A motivational poster somewhere in the walls of an office is trying to inspire leaders and here I’m dissecting it like it has appeared before a congressional hearing.
But I think the issue comes from treating smartness as a one-dimensional unit. That’s now how smartness works, there isn’t a universal scale.
Talking in the context of an engineering organization: A thoughtful designer sees experiences, and details that I can never see. A 10X engineer possesses a depth I will never be able to match. A great operator who can bring clarity from chaos in ways I can never replicate. Put all of these folks in the same room and each one would look the smartest depending on the type of problem you were trying to solve.
Perhaps that is what the original quote was really trying to imply. Surround yourself with people whose expertise exceeds yours. Build teams where someone else’s strongest skill is stronger than your own.
Now, that’s the part I completely agree with. But it still leaves an interesting question unanswered. Why do these people choose to work together? Because if expertise alone determined where people worked, every 10X engineer would only work for engineers better than themselves. Every thoughtful designer would only work for designers with better taste. Every great operator would only work for operators with better execution skills.
That is obviously not how organizations work.
People don’t just join expertise, they join missions. They join groups that are trying to solve problems worth solving. They join teams where their work matters. They join peers they respect and can learn from. They join cultures that value brilliance. They join environments where they believe they have a good chance of accomplishing something meaningful.
And sometimes they choose to work with leaders who are not the smartest person in the room on any particular subject. Not because those leaders have more expertise than they do, but because they bring something different. They have an inspiring vision. They provide direction when there are multiple paths forward. They create clarity among messy trade-offs. They create people-first cultures in which individual expertise turns into collective outcomes.
In that sense, leadership has never really been about being the smartest person in the room. It is about building a room where extraordinary people can do extraordinary things together.
